Isolation Can Increase Risk of Dementia


According to a recent study by John Hopkins researchers, isolated elderly are twenty-eight percent more likely to develop dementia than their peers who are not isolated socially. With few people to interact with socially on a regular basis, isolation seems to increase physical and mental health risk factors for dementia that include high blood pressure, heart disease, depression and reduced cognition, according to the National Institute on Aging. “Loneliness is a huge problem because retirement, bereavement and ill health mean many older people find they are spending a lot less time enjoying the company of others than they’d like,” says Abrahams. “Loneliness can affect your health, your wellbeing and the way you see yourself – it can make you feel invisible and forgotten.”

It brings us great joy to see our clients light up when we enter the room, talk with them (not at them), and provide the much needed social interaction they need.
