Shall I Stay or Shall I Go

As we age, most of us will come face to face later in our life with the dilemma of either finding a way to stay in our home or having to downsize and move into an assisted living complex or skilled nursing facility to accommodate the level of care we will need. Sometimes it falls to family to make that decision for us, if necessary.

Moving can be very stressful, especially if you've lived in your home a long time, accumulated a lifetime of precious memories there, and are surrounded by many things you cherish and don't want to part with. Our identity, who we are, is often tied to our home and belongings - who are we without them? The saying "parting is such sweet sorrow" extends beyond those we love to those things we love too. How do you choose, prioritize the most important things to take with you if a move in imminent in your future.

Sit down in advance with your loved one(s) and have a conversation about what your wishes are when that time comes. Take out a sheet of paper and make a list of all the pros and cons of staying in your home or moving elsewhere. If you decide to move, the next step is to customize a generic Moving Check List/Timeline to suit your particular moving situation and post it in a place where you and your family and caregiver(s) can refer to it as you move forward with your plan.
